Before forming Toto its members were session musicians for Steely Dan[3] Seals and Crofts[4] Boz Skaggs and Sonny and Cher. Five guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's singer.
About Toto
Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every style of music.
The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour established them as a brand all over the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all of the original Toto members were performing together for more than 31 years. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
